I’m a journalism major at the University of Oregon in Eugene, home of the Fightin’ Ducks, abundant hummus and tons and tons of trees.
I’ve been in the business on and off for eight years, from my high school newspaper to an internship at the The Yamhill Valley News-Register in McMinnville, Ore. over the summer of 2010.
Currently, I’m the copy chief for Flux, the flagship magazine of the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communications. I’m also a staff writer for DualShockers and I directed the redesign of The Student Insurgent at the university. I spent the 2010-2011 academic year as editor of The Torch, the student-managed newspaper at Lane Community College. I also have a Tumblog.
The purpose of this blog is to track my progress as I make my way through the J-School. Sometimes that means lecture notes, but my true passion lies in posts like this, where I go really in-depth and dissect news coverage. With any luck this will be the chronicle of a working reporter upon graduation. Right now I hope to cover the games industry, but I’m equally passionate about straight news, features and anything else that falls under the umbrella of journalism.
Welcome.

Eder, question–what kind of journalist do you want to be? Copy editor, managing editor, magazine writer?
Also, if you get a chance, take Rebecca Force and Peter Laufer, not to mention Wheeler!
Well, I’ve dreamed of being a news reporter for a long time and that’s still my first choice as a profession to pursue after I graduate. I’d also love to be paid to cover the video game industry as it’s something I’ve been fascinated by since I can remember. Writing features is a really close third; that’s what I’m hoping to gain more experience in very soon.
Fun! Best of luck to you! You have a publication or class picked out for features?
